Google's streaming music service adds mood to mix

No comments :
Google's music-subscription service will try to anticipate its listeners' mood swings as it amplifies its competition with Pandora, Spotify and other popular services that play tunes over the Internet.

Starting Tuesday, the $10-a-month All Access service will make music suggestions based on educated guesses about each subscriber's mood and likely activities at certain points in the day or week.

For instance, a subscriber who opens the service on a smartphone on a Monday morning might be offered a playlist suited for commuting, going to the gym or getting motivated for work. Opening the app on Monday evening, though, might generate songs appropriate for eating dinner, studying or unwinding.

Six different music mixes created for different emotions and activities — with such labels as "Jumping Out of Bed" or "In The Lonely Hour" — will be automatically displayed for All Access subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. The mixes won't be played unless the subscriber selects one. The feature won't be immediately available in the other 43 countries where All Access is sold.

The mood music also will be tailored to each listener's tastes, so a subscriber who already has signaled a preference for rock and an aversion for country music would be more likely to hear the Rolling Stones perform "Monkey Man" than "Dead Flowers" in their mixes.

Subscribers also will be able to request playlists designed for specific activities such as napping or housecleaning.

Google's attempt to cater to people's moods reflects the growing importance of delivering soundtracks that suit listeners' discrete tastes and lifestyles. Making the right recommendation is becoming more crucial now that Google, Pandora and Spotify have secured the licensing rights to most of the same music.

"The content is roughly the same, so the main thing you can do for a user now is to have the right context," said Brandon Bilinski, product manager for Google Play Music, which runs All Access. "We want to get our listeners to the right music to fit the mood and make them feel good."

Google Inc. picked up the mood-melding technology in its July purchase of Songza, a free music service with about 5 million listeners.

Google's All Access service launch just 17 months ago, leaving the company that runs the Internet's dominant search engine and other leading digital services in the unfamiliar position of trying to catch up.

Pandora Media Inc.'s free Internet radio station boasts 76 million monthly listeners, while Spotify has 40 million listeners, including more than 10 million subscribers to its $10-per-month service. Google hasn't disclosed how many people subscribe to its All Access service, which offers a music library spanning 30 million titles.

Selecting songs based on listener's shifting moods is similar to what a smart music player called Aether Cone does. That player draws upon the music from another subscription service called Rdio Unlimited, which also charges $10 per month.

Pandora, Spotify and other services all strive to lead their audiences to mixes and genres that will please them, though the others tend to depend on computer algorithms that analyze each person's preferences and listening histories.

Combining human knowledge with a computer's analytical powers is similar to what Beat Electronics was doing with its own music-streaming service before Apple Inc. bought it for $3 billion earlier this year. Apple has said Beats' recommendation system eventually might be blended into its own music-streaming service, though that hasn't happened yet.

Google's new feature includes several thousand playlists assembled by Songza music aficionados that include DJs, performers and critics. Songza's hand-picked playlists will be slightly adjusted by algorithms programmed to learn more about each listener's tastes and habits.

As time goes on, Google hopes to provide even more nuanced playlists that acknowledge a person's mood is likely to be much different while driving to work on a Friday morning than a Monday morning. For now, though, the Mountain View, California, company will depend on cues from each subscriber.

"We can be smart about a lot of things, but it's really hard to tell a person's mood," Bilinski said.

Twitter lets users stream music, audio via SoundCloud tie-up

No comments :

(Reuters) - Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) will allow users to play podcasts, music and other audio clips direct from their timelines, or message feeds, via a new feature designed in partnership with Berlin-based audio-streaming service SoundCloud.

The online messaging service introduced on Thursday what it called "Audio Card," through which users can listen to a variety of content whilst browsing their timelines.

For starters, Twitter has promised audio from SoundCloud's partners, which include such diverse sources as NASA, the Washington Post, CNN, David Guetta, Coldplay and Warner Music.

But it's trying to snag more content partners in future, Twitter said in a blogpost on Thursday.

Twitter didn't say how Audio Card might evolve, except to stress that it offers musicians a chance to post exclusive clips.

"Many more musical artists and creators will be able to share exclusive, in-the-moment audio to millions of listeners on Twitter," the company added.

Twitter's new feature comes after rivals from Apple Inc (AAPL.O) to Google Inc (GOOG.O) have jumped into the business of music-streaming, considered the fastest-growing segment of a music market dominated by iTunes.

Twitter had reportedly been in discussions to acquire audio-sharing website SoundCloud, which has been called the Youtube of music, as far back as June.

Green Day, Sting among nominees for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

No comments :

(Reuters) - Punk rock band Green Day, rockers Nine Inch Nails and singer Sting are among the 2015 nominees announced on Thursday for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They lead a diverse list that includes The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the late singer Lou Reed, German electronic group Kraftwerk, Motown singers The Marvelettes, and The Smiths, who broke up many years ago.

Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first record for induction into the Hall of Fame, which was established in 1983.

"Rock and roll incorporates the styles of so many different kinds of music and that's what makes this group of nominees, and this art form, so powerful and unique," Joel Peresman, the president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement.

Rockers Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, soul group Chic, rappers N.W.A, the late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, California funk group War, the R&B group The Spinners and singer Bill Withers were also nominated.

More than 700 artists, music industry professionals and historians will decide who will be inducted. Fans will also be able to cast their votes. The top five artists selected by the public will comprise a "fans' ballot" that will be counted with the other ballots to select the 2015 inductees.

The winners will be announced in December and inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Cleveland on April 18.

Singer Morrissey reveals treatments for cancerous tissues

No comments :

British singer Morrissey, who has had to cancel tours in recent years because of ill health, has said in an interview that he received several treatments to remove cancerous tissues.

The former frontman for alternative rock band The Smiths had to put off concerts last year and in 2014 after suffering various ailments, including a bleeding ulcer, double pneumonia and a respiratory infection. But he was not known to have revealed the cancer treatments.

"They have scraped cancerous tissues on four occasions already, but whatever," the 55-year-old Morrissey told Spain's El Mundo newspaper in an interview published on Monday.

"If I die, I die. If not, then no. Right now I feel good," he said, in a wide-ranging discussion in which he reiterated his support for Scottish independence and criticized his former music label, bullfighting and the world of show business.

The singer, who performed in Lisbon on Monday night and is due to give concerts in Madrid and Barcelona this week, was also asked about recent spells in hospitals.

"I'm conscious that in recent pictures I don't look too good, but that's what illness does to you," he said. "I'm not going to worry too much about that. I'll rest when I'm dead."

Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett set for new year's duet

No comments :

(AP) — Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are set to take the stage at The Cosmopolitan casino on New Year's Eve for their first show together in the U.S. since they released a joint album late last month.
The Las Vegas Strip resort announced Monday that the 28-year-old pop superstar and the 88-year-old jazz crooner will ring in the new year with jazz standards from their album "Cheek to Cheek."
"I can't wait to kick off 2015 'cheek to cheek' with the legendary Mr. Tony Bennett," Lady Gaga said in a statement. "New Year's celebrations are about cherishing family, friendship, and the future — three things this man has taught me much about."
Tickets for the show go on sale Friday.
Las Vegas welcomes more than 300,000 visitors each New Year's Eve holiday, and casinos step up with top-tier music acts, world-renowned DJs and an elaborate fireworks show.
Bringing in Bennett and Lady Gaga is an effort to distinguish the resort during a highly competitive time in the market, according to The Cosmopolitan's chief marketing officer, Lisa Marchese.
"We wanted to one-up ourselves for what people can expect," she said. "It's such an unexpected mashup — you just want to see it."

Lecrae looks to break mold of a Christian rapper

No comments :

(AP) — Lecrae is dubbed a Christian rapper, but he considers himself a rapper who happens to be Christian.
The Grammy-winning artist (his album "Gravity" won for best gospel album last year) is trying to avoid being boxed into one genre.
"I didn't really fit in either world," said Lecrae, 34, who's been endorsed by both Kirk Franklin and Busta Rhymes. "But it's telling to the gospel industry that there are people who crave a sound that is not traditional. To the mainstream industry, there's a voice of faith from all walks of life."
Last month, his seventh album, "Anomaly," became the first title to top Billboard's Top 200 and Gospel Albums charts in the same week. He believes this success could help bring him closer to being embraced by both gospel and mainstream music.
He's been able to build a strong grassroots fan base with his "Church Clothes" mixtapes series, hosted by hip-hop producer DJ Don Cannon and featuring Bun B and B.o.B. He wants to provide thought-provoking messages of life in songs without sounding like a Bible-thumping preacher.
"That's all they know of me, so I have to reeducate with my presence," Lecrae said. "Most of my interviews are comprised of do you drink? Do you smoke? Do you cuss? It's going to be a process for me to continue to be in people's faces and educating them on what my distinction is."
Lecrae doesn't smoke and tries to refrain from using profanities. He sometimes drinks alcohol, but not a lot.
His arms are covered with tattoos. He normally wears his hats tilted to the side. And he often wears slightly sagging pants. He knew that he was viewed as too gritty in the gospel world, and he had to overcome the perception that his curse-free rhymes are too clean in hip-hop culture.
Lecrae calls himself a "family oriented" man who attends a weekly men's Bible-study meeting. He's married and has three children, and makes sure he's home twice a week while on tour.
He recently appeared on "The Tonight Show," performing alongside the show's house band, The Roots, between segments.
Lecrae also recently kicked off his 36-city tour that will conclude Nov. 21 in Atlanta. He said he was inspired by Kanye West's "Yeezus" tour last year.
West "had very strong messaging," Lecrae said. "He was trying to inspire and communicate with people with imagery. It was more than a concert. It was like a theatrical performance, Broadway show. Like him, I don't want to box myself in. I want to push myself to the further extent with this tour."

'All about that Bass' bounces to top of British music chart

No comments :

(Reuters) - American singer Meghan Trainor was propelled to the number one spot in the British singles chart on Sunday by a surge in sales and online demand for her upbeat pop track "All about that Bass", the Official Charts Company said.

Trainor's song was listened to more than 1 million times online, helping it dethrone "Bang Bang" by pop trio Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande, which charted in second place.

Taylor Swift's "Shake it off" held firm in third place, with Sigma's "Changing" and "Blame" by Calvin Harris coming in at numbers four and five respectively.

British artist George Ezra reached number one in the album chart with "Wanted on Voyage", giving him his first chart-topper 14 weeks after its initial release. Another long-running cart success, Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour", rose one place to second.

Ed Sheeran moved up to third place with "X" and new entry "Carry on the Grudge" by Jamie T came in fourth spot. U.S. singer-songwriter Barbra Streisand completed the top five with "Partners".

Waylon Jennings' items up for auction in Phoenix

No comments :

(AP) — Outlaw country singer Waylon Jennings owned a vintage motorcycle that had previously belonged to his close friend, rock 'n' roll star Buddy Holly.

Jennings was supposed to have been with Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson when the crooners were killed in a 1959 small-plane crash that became known as "the Day the Music Died."

Two decades later, members of Holly's band, the Crickets, tracked down the red Ariel Cyclone and gave it to Jennings as a birthday gift that he kept in his living room until he died in 2002.

The bike is among thousands of items that Jennings' estate is putting on the auction block Sunday online and at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.

Jennings, known for his black cowboy hat, recorded 16 No. 1 country singles over his decades-long career. His hits include the theme from the "Dukes of Hazard," a television show that he also narrated, and the Willie Nelson duet "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys."

Something literally connected to Nelson also will be up for sale: his braids.

The signature locks were presented in 1983 as a gift to celebrate Jennings' sobriety at a party thrown by Johnny Cash, said Arlan Ettinger, co-founder of Guernsey's, the New York City-based auction house running the sale.

Jennings teamed with Nelson, Cash and Kris Kristofferson to form the country super group, the Highwaymen. Their original contract, signed by all four members, is also up for sale.

Ettinger wouldn't estimate how much the items would go for.

"It's very hard to say, particularly when something is made valuable by virtue of its history," Ettinger said. But the motorcycle, "I certainly think it's going to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Jennings' widow, singer Jessi Colter, who lives in Arizona, provided the items for sale, which also include guitars, handwritten song lyrics, a letter signed by John Lennon and a boxing robe worn by Muhammad Ali, Ettinger said.

The singer lived in suburban Phoenix when he died in 2002 at age 64 of diabetes-related health problems.

Ettinger said he had considered holding the auction in the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee, but Colter said her husband loved Arizona more than most places.

"He felt most at home here," Ettinger said.

Some auction proceeds will benefit Phoenix Children's Hospital per Colter's wishes, Ettinger said.

California officials unveil 'Johnny Cash Trail'

No comments :

(AP) — The city of Folsom has completed the first section of the "Johnny Cash Trail" that will pay tribute to the country music icon and his 1968 album "At Folsom Prison."

City officials planned to unveil the first section of the 2.5-mile trail on Saturday — a pedestrian and bike bridge designed to echo Folsom State Prison's east gate guard towers, according to the Sacramento Bee (http://bit.ly/1rbBHsD).

The trail will traverse prison property and link to area trails.

The newspaper reports that the city is planning a $3 million fundraising drive to pay for a 2-acre park next to the bridge and art installations along the trail — including a 40-foot steel statue of Cash.

The Sacramento Bee says Cash's daughter, Rosanne Cash, is expected to attend Saturday's ceremony.

Bandleader Nati Cano, leading figure in mariachi music, dies at 81

No comments :

(Reuters) - Grammy-winning mariachi bandleader Nati Cano, who stirred American audiences with the folk sounds of his native Mexico and played a key role in helping to teach young people how to play the music, has died at age 81, a bandmate said on Saturday.

Cano died on Friday at a hospital in Fillmore, California, after a long battle with cancer, said the bandmate, Sergio Alonso.

Born in 1933 in a rural town near Guadalajara, Mexico, Natividad "Nati" Cano grew up with the mariachi music his family of day laborers played in their spare time.

The traditional folk music is centered on the sounds of violins, trumpets, guitar and two guitar-like instruments unique to Mexico, the vihuela and the guitarron.

His father taught Cano to play the vihuela, and he later went to an academy to learn the violin before dropping out to join family members in entertaining patrons at cantinas.

In 1960, after having moved across the U.S. border to Los Angeles, he joined a mariachi group that he would later come to lead and rename Los Camperos, which translates to The Countrymen.

Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, as the band has been known, went on to use a Los Angeles restaurant called La Fonda as their home base where they performed regularly. They toured with singer Linda Ronstadt to promote her 1987 album "Canciones de mi Padre," and were one of several mariachi bands Ronstadt relied on to make the recording.

Cano was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2008 he and Los Camperos won a Grammy Award for best regional Mexican album for their release "Amor."

Alonso, in a phone interview, called Cano the most important figure in popularizing mariachi music in the United States.

"He epitomized the band leader, he was stern but he was fair. He was also very idealistic and he really romanticized mariachi music," Alonso said.

Cano also played a key role in helping to start a number of mariachi education programs in public schools in the Southwest United States.

"In Mexico, if you're thinking about education, about mariachi, yeah, you can find good mariachi there," Cano told the Los Angeles Daily News in 2008. "But as far as education for the kids to learn, they're kind of behind a little bit."

Metallica, Rihanna booked for 'Valor' concert

No comments :

(AP) — Eminem, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica and Rihanna are among the artists booked for a televised live concert from the National Mall in Washington next month to raise awareness of issues concerning veterans.

"The Concert for Valor" is planned for 7 p.m. EDT on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11. It will be televised by HBO, which will provide its signal free to non-subscribers.

Jamie Foxx, Dave Grohl, comic John Oliver, Carrie Underwood and the Zac Brown Band also are scheduled to perform, with appearances by Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Other participants will be announced in the coming weeks.

Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz is spearheading the event. The concert is free, but sponsors hope to direct fans to ways they can volunteer or donate money to causes helping war veterans.

"They've stepped up," Schultz said. "Now it's our turn."

The concert will feature stories from a book Schultz has written about veterans' experiences.

Tony Bennett breaks own record as oldest artist atop Billboard chart

No comments :

(Reuters) - At 88, veteran crooner Tony Bennett broke his own record as the oldest living artist to land a No. 1 record on the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday with his latest compilation of duets with Lady Gaga.

"Cheek to Cheek," which features New York singers Bennett and Gaga singing classics such as "Anything Goes" and "Let's Face The Music And Dance," sold 131,000 copies in its first week according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Bennett previously set the record for becoming the oldest-living artist to land a No. 1 album in 2011 aged 85, with his compilation "Duets," which included a track with Gaga.

"Cheek to Cheek" is the second compilation of classic songs to top the Billboard 200 chart for the second consecutive week, after fellow New York songstress Barbra Streisand's "Partners" debuted at No. 1 last week.

"Partners" dropped to No. 3 this week, behind country singer Kenny Chesney's "Big Revival," which entered the chart at No. 2 with sales of 130,000.

Other new albums to break into the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart, which measures physical and digital album sales across all genres, include English indie rockers Alt-J at No. 4 with "This Is All Yours" and a cappella group Pentatonix at No. 5 with "PTX, Vol. III."

Blues rocker Joe Bonamassa clocked in at No. 8 with "Different Shades of Blues" and R&B singer Jennifer Hudson rounded out the top ten with her new album "JHUD."

For the week ending Sept. 28, total album sales clocked in at 4.4 million units, down 14 percent from the comparable week in 2013, while year-to-date total sales totaled 175.71 million, also down 14 percent from last year, Billboard said.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens cancels New York show over scalpers

No comments :

(Reuters) - Singer-songwriter Yusuf, who was Cat Stevens until he converted to Islam, said he had cancelled a show scheduled for New York City because scalpers had driven up prices.
Yusuf, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, said in a posting on Facebook on Wednesday that fans had alerted him to exorbitant ticket prices demanded by some websites for tickets, so he had decided to cancel the event.
"My fans will understand and I thank them for informing me about the extortionate ticket prices already being listed on some websites," the British-born singer wrote.
"I have been a longtime supporter of paperless tickets to my shows worldwide and avoiding scalpers."
Yusuf's show was part of an international six-city tour that will be his first in the United States since 1976. He is scheduled to play in Toronto on December 1, followed by a five-event trip through the United States starting in Philadelphia.

Yusuf's first new studio album in five years, "Tell 'Em I'm Gone", will be released on October 27, his record label Sony said last month.

Lady Gaga sheds quirky image for jazz album with Tony Bennett

No comments :

(Reuters) - Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, bridging a 60-year age gap to form one of music's unlikeliest pairs, launched a jazz album on Monday that lets the pop diva put aside her wacky image to sing sweet harmonies with the elder statesman of cool.

"Cheek to Cheek," on sale on Tuesday after a launch concert in the ornate Renaissance setting of the Grand-Place in Brussels, features jazz standards by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and others a distant world away from Lady Gaga's 21st century.

"When I began writing music for the music industry, I became known as the quirky girl from downtown New York," she told a news conference at the 15th-century city hall.

"So I tailored my music to be that way, to get noticed, to be able to travel more and play more shows," said the 28-year-old artist known to many as much for startling costumes - like a robe made of meat - as for her innovative music and stage shows.

But swathed in blue velvet with a 2-metre (6-foot) train, Lady Gaga this week was more 1950s Hollywood star than queen of MTV in 2014 - although still easily young enough to be Bennett's grand-daughter.

"I feel liberated," she said, holding the hand of her fellow Italian-American New Yorker and musing on the challenges of old-style jazz. "It's been over eight years and I've not been singing out. But Tony will not accept any less than all of me."

The two first met in 2011 at a charity concert in New York and a short time afterwards, recorded a version of "The Lady is a Tramp" for Bennett's album Duets II.

"I was overjoyed that he had heard that I'd been singing jazz for so long, perhaps I was even afraid that I had lost that part of me," Lady Gaga said.

Bennett, who shot to fame with "Because of You" in 1951, said he enjoyed the simplicity of a jazz setting.

"I started the very same way as she did, with thousands of people cheering," he said.

"Later on I said I want to keep it in a simple way. Instead of the big stadiums, I'd like to play in fine acoustical homes."

For the concert to launch the album, the two chose a grand but intimate outdoor location, setting up stage on the Grand-Place, a site of pomp and pageantry down the centuries.

Once again, Lady Gaga kept it simple, sticking to a glittery gold cocktail dress and refraining from any of the costume changes that her live performances are known for.

Another change was the composition of the approximately 5,000-strong audience on the square, combining Lady Gaga's young fan base with many middle-aged spectators.

For about 30 minutes, the two performed some of the highlights of the album, from the upbeat duet "It Don't Mean a Thing" to Lady Gaga's solemn solo performance "Lush Life."

The crowd in Brussels responded enthusiastically to the brief show and Lady Gaga appeared touched by the reaction as she and Bennett bowed out.

Before the concert, Bennett had already predicted that Lady Gaga would strike a chord with fans as a jazz singer.

"I know that when Lady Gaga comes out you will hear a reaction that's never been heard in this great city," Bennett said. "People love her, and she loves them back."

BENNETT, GAGA HAVE SPECIAL CHEMISTRY ON NEW CD

No comments :

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, "Cheek to Cheek" (Interscope/Columbia)
Tony Bennett has never forgotten the boost he got when Frank Sinatra declared him "the best singer in the whole business." Now it's Bennett's turn to grant his imprimatur to another Italian-American singer from New York: Stefani Germanotta, better known as Lady Gaga.
Bennett and Gaga first teamed up on his Grammy-winning 2011 "Duets II" CD to perform the standard "The Lady Is a Tramp," with Gaga displaying impressive vocal chops. It turns out that this seemingly odd couple — separated in age by 60 years — both share a passion for the Great American Songbook and jazz singing, which Gaga says she first took up as a teenager.
That led them to record "Cheek to Cheek" — only the second full album that Bennett has done with another singer in his nearly 70-year recording career. The first was the sublime 2002 album, "A Wonderful World," with k.d. lang, on which the two voices blended smoothly on a subdued collection of ballads associated with Louis Armstrong.
There's a completely different chemistry on "Cheek to Cheek," starting with the opening track, Cole Porter's "Anything Goes," with the duo trading lines in a bright, brassy big-band swing arrangement. A sassy Gaga enthusiastically belts out her lines, while Bennett is as always elegant and precise in his phrasing.
Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" are both briskly paced with Gaga's high register vocals spinning around Bennett's middle-range lines with the two engaging in some crisp harmonizing and occasional scatting. On the Nat King Cole hit "Nature Boy," Gaga shows a different side, breathily caressing the lyrics and softly blending her lines with Bennett's, backed by a lush orchestral arrangement and the late Paul Horn's airy flute solo.
This is a liberating album for Gaga who shows that she doesn't need the outlandish meat dresses, voice-altering electric effects and elaborate stage shows to make an impact because her voice stands out on its own. Had she been born in an earlier era, Gaga would have been right at home in an MGM musical. On her solo features, Gaga sings softly and with restraint on Porter's ballad "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," and shows her vulnerability in an emotional rendition of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life," clearly identifying with the song's theme of loss and heartache.
The only surprise with Bennett is how vibrant he sounds at 88 with a voice that though raspier than in his early years has matured gracefully like fine wine, taking on more emotional depth, as reflected in his solo numbers, "Don't Wait Too Long" and Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady."
Bennett brings out another side of Gaga's artistry by recording this album in his customary manner — with the main performers interacting in the studio. The arrangements feature his touring jazz combo with pianist Mike Renzi plus such top-notch guest soloists as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Brian Newman.
At times, Gaga's jazz phrasing can sound forced, as on Jerome Kern's "I Won't Dance," and she sometimes belts out the lyrics like a pop star. Gaga, who says she intends to record more jazz albums, has great potential as a jazz singer and could learn much from Bennett who early in his career often sang in a stiff operatic voice before becoming more relaxed, nuanced and jazzier once he started recording albums of the timeless standards.
